Nuclear Power Plant Potassium Iodide

Naval Air Station Patuxent River, in collaboration with the St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD), has announced a Potassium Iodide (KI) distribution event on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 for those residing or working within a 10-mile radius of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant.

To receive KI tablets, individuals must complete a form indicating the number of people in their household and provide a signature. The potassium iodide tablets will be available at no cost, while supplies last. The St. Mary’s Health Dept. regularly distributes potassium iodide to county residents who live or work within the 10-mile emergency protection zone of the Calvert Cliffs plant, and includes those within zip codes 20659, 20636, 20619, and 20653.

As a reminder, these distributions are carried out through individual government programs, designed to safeguard those living or working near nuclear reactors. Anbex, Inc. and its Internet sales and marketing division, Nukepills, Inc., have no affiliation with these events, other than originally supplying the associated agencies with Iosat. Oftentimes, the free supplies offered are not adequate enough to serve the demand of those residing in the covered areas. If you did not receive a free allotment due to supply constraints or missed the deadline, contact us to order Iosat or other related radiation protection supplies.

WHAT IS POTASSIUM IODIDE?

Iosat potassium iodide can help protect the thyroid gland by reducing the risk of thyroid cancer in individuals exposed to radioactive iodine during a radiation or nuclear event. Since the thyroid is vulnerable to radioactive iodine, potassium iodide serves as a protective measure when used under the guidance of public health officials.
