For many years, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has consistently warned of the potential dangers from purchasing and consuming potassium iodide products that are either “fake” or non FDA-approved. Unfortunately, consumers have not heeded these warnings as numerous non-approved products continue to thrive on Amazon and elsewhere.
As a reminder, Iosat™ potassium iodide by Anbex, Inc. is the only 130 mg brand on the market that is tested and approved by the FDA for radiation emergencies.
Consuming a non-FDA-approved product can potentially be dangerous due to the lack of safety testing and regulation. Without proper oversight, these products may contain harmful or unknown ingredients that can lead to serious health issues, allergic reactions, or toxicity. Additionally, the product may simply not be effective, which can lead to life-threatening consequences in the event of a nuclear or radiological emergency.
Obtaining FDA approval for potassium iodide requires, among other things, stringent manufacturing protocols that include foil-sealed packaging to keep out humidity for a 10-year shelf life. Numerous non-approved KI brands are currently offered in bottles containing loose pills, which can further compromise the integrity, safety, and efficacy of the product.
Another concern of non FDA-approved products is the often exaggerated or misleading claims by manufacturers and distributors, which can deceive and endanger consumers. These non-regulated potassium iodide products may also interact dangerously with prescribed medications or other supplements, leading to unexpected and potentially severe health complications.
Lastly, it should be noted that only KI products that are FDA-approved may be legally marketed in the United States.
